At long last, garden members now have an opportunity to visit the fabled
eco-shed!
http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~gmgutosk/ecoshed/
Leave: Saturday, September 8 (morning)
Return: Sunday, September 9 (evening)
RSVP to me at gmgutoski at uwaterloo.ca so we can work out the details.
Transportation:
Ian and myself each have vehicles and can each take a couple passengers
(and their gear). Beyond that, gardeners will require their own
transportation.
Room & Board:
There are three 8x12ft "sheds" (including the eco-shed). The sheds are
basically glorified tents made out of wood. Gardiners are also welcome
to bring their own camping gear and sleep out under the stars.
Gardeners should bring their own food and water -- I have one or two
extra coolers and water jugs if needed. Perishables will easily last
the weekend in a cooler with ice. There is a fire pit with grill, and a
small propane stove for cooking.
About the site:
My parents own 100+ acres of rocky forest just north of Durham, Ontario
(1h20m drive from Waterloo). The land straddles the Rocky Saugeen
river. It's a beautiful little river with several small waterfalls, and
it's among the dwindling habitats of wild trout in Ontario. The
snorkeling is spectacular if you can stand the cold water. There is
little light pollution and the stars are absolutely beautiful at night.
Facilities are minimal. The only running water is the river itself, and
the "toilet" is a wooden box on top of a hole in the ground (it's more
sanitary than it sounds, but it's not for city-slickers).
Back in the 1800's, several mills dotted the river, one of which was
located on our property. The remains of the little building are still
around, and gigantic 50-year-old trees are growing inside the crumbling
walls of the old building.
