[Garden] UW Garden Meeting

Hello all, I asked my mother for some advice back in the fall when Candace
was successful in getting the money for the garden. She's had many years of
gardening experience and tried many different tools along the way so I
thought it might be good to pass along the information she sent me.
Obviously some of the following are only necessary for a significantly
larger garden that what we are dealing with. I'll see if I can get digital
photos of some of my favorite tools that not everyone may know of when I am
home this weekend.

If anyone has a Lee Valley and/or William Dam or other garden tool company
catalogues it would be great if you could bring them to the meeting on the
7th.

Hope the following is interesting and helpful!

Rachel

It depends a bit on who and what the garden is doing- do you have a tool
shed to keep tools in safely ? Are you starting transplants- I am assuming
not, that this is just for outside in the garden stuff.

Aside from the security and who is going to maintain and keep track of these
tools.....you'll want to figure out some way to ID them - paint all the
handles bright yellow or something.....

Generally- keep it simple- multiples of basic tools will serve you better
than one of everything in the catalog. I can show you some of these things
on Friday when you are home. Remember to figure in taxes (14%)

hand tools:

trowels - narrow and wide with wood or metal handles ( not plastic they
break)

Yankee weeders or short handled Ho- Me diggers( Lee Valleys names).

hand seeders-

Knee pads- am I showing my age?; widely avaliable at hardware stores - semi
rigid foam with velcro fasteners for $6.95 come in different colors.

Earthway Precision seeder with extra seed plates

Wind up Planting Line- get two at least; Lee Valley has a great one called
Victorian Planting Line but its pricey.

row cover- get in bulk from Wm Dam from one of the seed mail order places

black plastic- ditto

weed barrier clothe - ditto

plastic garden cloches 10/$18.95 Lee Vallley

Wheel barrow(s)- hardware or TSC stores. Ideally ones with plastic or
fiberglass bin, but there are hard to find (they last too long) The
traditional metal ones rust starting almost immediately- it helps if they
are always turned on their side so that moisture doesn't sit in the bin.
(garden way carts are great but they will eat up your budget in one

fell swoop)

stakes for tomatoes - standard 7 ft T bars at TSC will run you $7 apiece
but they are very versatile - can hold up a trellis as well as be used
individually.

Watering/irrigation equipment?

Long Handled tools:

Digging forks and digging spades - Lee Valley has plastic coated metal
handled stanless steel ones that have a lifetime guarantee.

loop and collinear hoes- Lee Valley

Draw hoes (the traditional hoe)

garden rakes (not leaf rakes - metal flat head with large teeth)

Subject: [Garden] UW Garden Meeting

Just wanted to let everyone know that the UW Community Gardeners will be
meeting

at the WPIRG office (Student Life Centre room #2139) on February 7 at 5pm.
We

will be going over some of the initiatives we would like to see done with
the

money we received from WESEF as well as picking out seeds to order for the
2007

growing season.

For those of you who were able to attend I'm sure the Guelph Organic
Conference

got you all excited to start growing again:)

Candace
