I don't think we need to worry whether a tiny bit of fertilizer
applied to little weeny bedding plants is organic or not. Just use a
good quality fertilizer with both macro and micro nutrients. The best
balance for these purposes can be achieved with a specially formulated
product. Ask Lynn for a recommendation if you wish. The fertilizer I
use at home for bedding plants contains the three macronutrients
nitrogen, phosphosporic acid, potash (= pottasium oxide); and the
trace elements iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron and molybdenum.
It's applied at a rate of about a teaspoon per 5 litres of warm water.
Compost is often not particularly nutritious, depending on its
origin. The bagged, compost-based commercial seed starter mix I
bought this year is disappointing and so low in macronutrients that
I've had to apply fertilizer at only 4 weeks when the tomato plants
are still only 3 inches high. Usually I don't need to give them a
boost until three weeks later.
