How Much Should We Pay for Food?

Are food prices too high? Too low? How should food prices change to bring
about a healthier food system? The Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable
invites anyone interested in food issues to a panel presentation that
addresses these questions.

                   When: Monday, January 19, 7-9pm,
                   Where: "Canada Room"
                                         The Waterloo Region Record
                                         (King and Benton streets,
                    Kitchener)

Recent research by Region of Waterloo Public Health found that 10.7% of
Waterloo Region residents worry about not having enough to eat due to lack
of money. Spikes in food prices in the spring of 2008 made the situation
even more precarious for those on limited incomes. Meanwhile, farmers
struggle to make a living on prices for their food products that barely
cover production costs. "In a healthy food system, farmers would earn
enough from their work to make a decent living, and everyone would have
enough nutritious food to eat, says Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable
Co-Chair, Ellen Desjardins. "That's the ideal, but how do we get there from
here? That's what we want to explore in this event."

This event will feature a panel of advocates for a healthy local food
system who will discuss a host of topics related to the cost of food.

Alison Blay-Palmer, Wilfrid Laurier University professor
"What is and is not included in the price of the food we
             buy"
Steve Martin, Martin's Family Fruit Farm,
"How local farmers factor into the equation"
             Laura Callum, Community Nutrition Worker
"Preparing healthy food on limited incomes"
Gerald Kara, Food distributor and Retailer
"The challenges retailers face when prices are high"
Katherine Pigott, Region of Waterloo Public Health
"The health impacts of poor nutrition and what we can do
             about it"

The Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable is a group of eighteen
representatives from key sectors and interests of the local food system who
share the goal of a healthier food system in Waterloo Region. Our
representatives include local farmers; emergency food providers; food
processing, distributing, and retail businesspeople; health professionals;
and more. Region of Waterloo Public Health provides administrative and
