1.       The Home Depot - Evergreen Rebuilding Nature Grant, 2009. The Home
Depot Canada and Evergreen are pleased to offer the Rebuilding Nature Grant
Program to support environmental stewardship projects in cities and towns
across Canada. The Rebuilding Nature Grant Program provides community groups
with grants of $1,000, $3,000 or $8,000 - plus $2,000 in Home Depot gift
cards - to cover the costs of tools and building projects, native plants and
trees, and other expenses. As well as providing grants and gift cards for
community initiatives, The Home Depot has the unique ability to bring
together volunteerism and the expertise of its employees to support projects
through its Team Depot program. Application deadline: February 6, 2009


2.       Wal-Mart - Evergreen Green Grants.  Wal-Mart Canada and Evergreen
are pleased to offer Green Grants, a national program that helps fund
community-based restoration and stewardship initiatives in urban and
urbanizing areas. Green Grants, a Canadian community greening program
sponsored by Wal-Mart Canada and led by Evergreen, provides funds of up to
$10,000 to local groups working on urban naturalization projects that use
native plants to restore and steward woodlands, meadows, wetlands and
ravines. This grant program also supports community gardening projects that
involve native plants and food gardening. Application deadline: March 27,
2009.


 

Events

 

1.       Making Our Visions A Reality & Seed Starting Workshop - This event
will be a follow up to the Visioning Session that was held in November.
York Nursery will also provide a short workshop on Starting Seedlings in
your Home.  The event is open to ALL community gardeners and interested
public.  It will be held at the Reformation Lutheran Church, 456 Krug St.,
Kitchener, Saturday, February 7th, 2009 from 11am-1:30pm.  A free brunch
will be provided, RSVP appreciated.

 

2.       Educational forum in Toronto - Hear experts in the field of urban
agriculture speak about current issues arising in urban food production and
how the City of Toronto can best support the urban agriculture movement
while considering important constraints and opportunities. This is a special
meeting of the Parks and Environment Committee for the City of Toronto.  The
meeting will be held in Committee Room 1, 2nd Floor, Toronto City Hall on
Thursday February 5, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The agenda is

3.       SPIN Farming Workshop in Toronto.  Learn the essential aspects of
starting and running an urban growing business.  Topics covered will be: top
crops and strategies for making your enterprise profitable, working with
land owners and business partners, urban growing strategies and an overview
of start-up & operating costs.  The workshop will take place Friday,
February 6th 2009 from 1 pm - 5 pm in Toronto at FoodShare located at 90
Croatia St.  Cost is $30.  For more information visit:

Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 from 6:30pm- 8:30pm at Toronto City Hall, Council

4.       Habitat Gardening: Bringing the Landscape to Life with Leslie Work.
This presentation/workshop explores the significance of gardens in the wider
context of the living world. Its focus is a "food web" approach to gardening
where an understanding of the plant's role in relation to wildlife is
cultivated. The natural history of plants will be tied in to the interesting
adaptations of some of the wildlife you can expect to visit your habitat
garden. Be prepared to get your hands dirty, as we will be seeding an
assortment of plants which you can take home with you to grow and plant out
in early spring. Space is limited. Cost: $10.00 (rare event card holders
$5.00) Thursday February 12, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Register by Tuesday,
February 10. Location - Meet at the rare admin building, 1679 Blair Road in
Cambridge at 6:45 pm.

Growing For Nourishment and Nourishing the Future Conference 2009. Hosted by
COG Toronto, this one day workshop will explore the foods you eat, how
visionary farmers grow quality food, and the larger benefits of being
organic. Saturday, February 21, 2009, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. 89 Chestnut St.
Conference Centre, Toronto 

 

6.       Fermented Foods. Discussion will cover background on fermenting
foods, how and why to ferment foods, health benefits, and a spectacular
taste testing of various lactic acid ferments. Workshop participants will
prepare colourful multi-vegetable sauerkraut as part of this interactive
session. February 21, 1-3 pm at the Little City Farm, 508 Duke St. W.,
Kitchener. Cost: $20/person. Pre-registration required.

7.       "Flower Power" Horticultural Therapy Workshop". Featuring Paul
Zammit, June 10, 2009, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Meadow Acres Garden Centre,
