Do we need to be providing such good-willed, but elaborate and
time-consuming acts of charity for Food Services when what UW really
needs is to develop a comprehensive at-source composting plan? Other
universities manage to figure such things out, but UW has been ducking
the problem for 20 years and has never responded responsibly to good
efforts (mostly from students and student organizations) to have them
implement even the simplest components of a sustainability plan, such
as composting. I've gone to several conferences on campus
sustainability and it's embarrassing to see how backward UW is
compared to other campuses and how badly it treats
progressively-minded and energetic students and their organizations
who have great ideas and are willing to help out. It's a kindly act to
help them, but not a set-up that should be continued indefinitely. The
stupidest example of UW's behaviour was when Minolta Hagey students
through their own initiative put in a small composter. Meanwhile a
rat - yes one lonely rat - was seen running around in the underbrush
over near Environmental Studies so a giant meeting was convened with
23 different participants from around campus to address the "rat
problem" and Minolta Hagey was ordered to remove its composter, even
though there was no evidence whatsoever that a rat had ever visited
it. I had to be at the bizarre meeting; it was obvious that the real
rats were over at UW administration.
